As an OnlyFans creator I polled my very favorite subreddit, Creators Advice for what sex workers wish they knew when starting out. These are some of my favorite responses from creators both veteran and newbie. A few of these tips are more important than others but they are all incredibly helpful in one way or another.

Boundaries are Essential

Boundaries are essential in sex work, when it comes to both safety and mental health.  When you’re starting out, you feel like you can invalidate or stretch your boundaries to make money but I’m here to tell you that no amount of money is worth that. Giving content away for free, doing a roleplay you aren’t comfortable with, showing face, or lowering prices… it does not matter babe, it is not worth it! Stick firm to those boundaries and remember your worth. If you don’t want to do something, don’t do it. More importantly, never EVER risk your account by violating terms of service on any site, for a boy. Losing your account will never ever be worth that. If you need to see Terms of Service for Onlyfans look here, Fansly’s Terms of Service, and Sextpanther’s Code of Conduct.

Talking about boundaries is a great transition into the next piece of advice creators wished they knew starting out and it relates to DM’s. Keep. Them. Closed.

Turn Your DM’s off

Trust me babe, I was just like you starting leaving my DM’s on, on every social media platform, replying and offering free trial links. This is not going to work out like you think it will. I promise that no amount of timewasters on Instagram, Reddit or otherwise will make up enough money to justify it.

I wasted so much time I could have been promoting and creating content replying to DM’s, to make less than $100 off of Reddit during my entire first year. The people who want to talk to you, know how to find you and will not be in your DM’s asking for free previews, it’s been proven time and time again.

When it comes to DM’s on places like Instagram and other social media platforms you’ll see much of the same thing with more unsolicited d*ck pics and more hate than you could imagine. In addition to these, I cannot tell you how many people I have needed to block due to getting unsolicited video or audio calls on Instagram. It is best for your safety and mental health to just leave DM’s off. This will also give you more time to focus on creating content and conversing with people who do pay, because success in the adult industry takes so much time and effort.

Success Won’t Happen Overnight, and it WILL Be Hard

I think we’ve all seen the Reels or TikToks of creators who have had overnight success as a spicy creator, the fact is that doesn’t happen for most of us. Now, I’m not discounting this completely, it is possible it just isn’t likely. It took me well over a year of hard work and patience to reach ten thousand dollars in income. It is an uphill battle for sure, but like someone said on Reddit, “It is hard work but it is the most rewarding work you will ever do.” I never expected to fall in love with being an OnlyFans girl but it is something I hope I have the opportunity to do for the rest of my life. I feel more empowered and free, not only because I love my body more than ever have before but because I have an income stream that allows me to give myself and my family experiences I could only dream of growing up.

Choose Your Username Wisely

When you’re starting out as a creator the thought of creating an alias or usernames for accounts is daunting. I know that I struggled personally, it was the second longest wait when becoming a spicy creator (we’ll get to the longest wait, next) and involved so much research and contemplation. I honestly think I put more time into coming up with an alias for my adult creator business than I did picking my son’s name LOL.

Due to the fact that I tried to keep my username the same or as close as possible to the same on each platform (always a good tip, it makes you easier to find) I had no clue that putting the letters “OF” in your username makes it incredibly hard to promote on places like Reddit or other social media platforms. I do think if you used it on say Instagram, you’re more likely to get shadow banned or lose your account.

Be Sure You’re Prepared

The number one mistake I see new creators make is that they have no idea just how long verification takes on adult sites. Ensure that you have everything you need ready to go by using my free Adult Creator Startup Checklist. This checklist has a few items that will help you ensure you have what you need to get started as an adult creator. I’m looking forward to making a more in depth blog post soon on things you need to know before becoming an adult creator.

Being Banned is Likely

If I’m being 100% honest I wanted to title this section ‘Being Banned is Inevitable” but maybe there is someone out there who hasn’t been banned. It happens to most spicy creators though, either you break a rule on a subreddit, or get too suggestive when creating a reel. I’m here to remind you that it has happened to SO many of us! I keep a couple of Instagram accounts going at a time, and a couple of TikTok accounts, because this has happened to me. I’ve also learned to let my personality sell my pages, instead of my body. Isn’t that what subscribers really want anyways? Porn is free, the interaction is what they want.

Organize, Organize, Organize!

Whether you’re labeling posts on your page, or ensuring your unedited content is stored in correct folders on your laptop, organization is crucial in this industry! Honestly though, if you don’t hear this tip in the beginning, you’ll learn the hard way later on.I am still trying to find videos, or worse yet, I ran out of storage and deleted something I could have just labeled properly and found a way to store!

Have. Fun.

I saved the most important advice for last. Have fun. If you aren’t enjoying what you do as a creator there is no point in doing it. I can honestly say that I have never loved myself more than I do since becoming a creator. I feel free, my sex life is amazing, I have learned about SO many new kinks, and become a more open person with both myself and others.
